2. Is it better for the environment to dispose of my old TV, even though it still works, and buy a new TV?

No, disposing of TV sets is not a good environmental practice as there are harmful components such as lead in the picture tube that can cause pollution and health problems. It is better to keep the TV set, get a converter box, and save money! You can donate working TV sets to several charities by calling YSU re:CREATE, at 330-941-2238.

3. What is The Green Team?

"The Green Team" is the informal name for the Mahoning County Solid Waste Management District, a county governmental agency under the authority of the Board of Mahoning County Commissioners. The Division is responsible for the implementation of the waste reduction strategies such as recycling, reuse, source reduction, and composting; litter prevention, and related activities as listed in the ratified Solid Waste Plan. The goal is to significantly reduce the solid waste stream in a cost-effective manner.

5. When my TV set stops working and can not be repaired, should I recycle it?

Yes! The Mahoning County Green Team holds electronic recycling drives throughout the year, and residents may take their non-working TV set to get it recycled. Since the dismantling process is expensive, there is a charge based on the size of the picture tube. However, that is a small price to pay in order to protect the environment.

6. If I have a paid TV service such as cable or satellite, do I need a converter box?

No, you will receive the digitally transmitted signal though your carrier.

7. Do I have to purchase a high definition TV (HDTV)?

No, you need a digital TV which is not always a HDTV, and are less expensive.

8. I have an older style, working TV set with an antenna. Will I have to get rid of the TV in order to receive broadcasts?

No, you will need a digital-to-analog converter box that will cost between $40 and $70, much less than a new TV costs. Coupons can be obtained online, or call 888-388-2009, or 877-530-2634 (TTY).

9. I have items that are not accepted at the curb or drop-off sites. Can I still recycle them?
